Choosing compound and indexed strippers

Find the actual opening

Compare the marked gauges or metric positions rather than treating the highest and lowest values as a continuous range. For the KNIPEX 12 12 14, the published AWG values are six individual positions.

Check the intended insulation and parts

Indexed compound tools can have adapted blades for specific insulation constructions. If the blade is replaceable, match its part number to the exact tool and revision. Similar red or blue grips do not establish a fit.

Department questions

What makes a compound tool different?

The mechanism holds the wire while the stripping section pulls the cut insulation away.

Does compound action imply a self-adjusting gauge?

No. Many models in this department use discrete gauge holes or blades.

Can I transfer blades between visually similar tools?

Use the manufacturer's compatibility chart. The same body style can be sold with different blade profiles.
