Choosing fixed-notch wire strippers

Read both gauge scales

Start with the AWG marking and conductor construction. On the Klein K11095, for instance, 8 AWG is documented for solid wire and the stranded range begins at 10 AWG. The two scales answer different buying questions.

Choose how much the jaw should do

A slim nose is useful in crowded work. A combination plier may add a reaming profile, a screw shear or a crimp zone. Check the individual specifications for the added function before counting on one tool for several jobs.

Are the same AWG values always supported for solid and stranded wire?

No. Many manual strippers mark separate ranges. Check the construction and the exact model.

Can a wire cutter shear machine screws?

Only use a tool that separately documents a screw shear and the required thread size.

What do plastic grips tell me about electrical protection?

Use these pages for de-energized work. A plastic grip alone does not establish an insulation rating.
